Blog comments policy

  1. Don’t be a dick.
  2. If you’re being a dick, I’ll delete your comment, unless maybe you’re being a really funny dick.
  3. I am the final arbiter of dickery.
  4. I will try not to be a dick myself in deciding whether you’re being a dick. No promises, though.
  5. Get over it. It’s just some guy’s blog, and he’s like kind of a dick. Anyway, do you have any idea how few people read this thing?

No, and now you start kicking out some of the few commenters you have. Cutting your blog to size, aren’t you…

(Had any trouble with dick comments lately? Hope I’m not being a dick now!)

I’ve not actually had any comments that bad. But I haven’t blogged anything for a while and I couldn’t think of anything decent.

It’s not a bad thing to think about how to deal with nasty comments. I haven’t had anything bad so far either, but you never know, the next troll may be just one click away.

Anyway, I like your stuff and enjoy reading your blog!

Nothing like being proactive… still, I have exactly *one* real comment from *one* real person on my own blog. I’m not sure what I would do if someone were to behave badly in my comments section!

I’ve heard it said that the primary uses for the Internet are arguing with strangers and sharing cat videos. “Being a dick in the comments” must be by far the largest subset of the former. Remember the aphorism from earlier days of ubiquitous personal computer usage, the one about backing up your data regularly because there were only two kinds of computer users, those who had already lost data and those who just hadn’t lost any yet? Substitute “bloggers who allow comments” and consider yourself fortunate to be in the latter category.

    Is it “dickery” or “dickitude?”

Good question. A dickish comment could be termed “a dickicism”.

I humbly request a “Final Arbiter of Dickery” mug, please.
